India unveils $1.25b mission to propel AI growth

India embarks on a significant endeavor with the approval of the “IndiaAI Mission,” backed by an initial budget of $1.24 billion. This mission aims to bolster the AI landscape by supporting startups and fostering innovations over the next five years. The IndiaAI Mission seeks to democratize access to computing power, a pivotal element for AI development, by providing nationwide accessibility to innovators, startups, students, and educational institutions. Minister Piyush Goyal unveiled this initiative on March 7, highlighting its goal to structure implementation through a public-private partnership model.

Comprising seven components, the mission focuses on various facets of AI development, including building and democratizing compute capacity, developing indigenous large multimodal models (LMMs), and streamlining access to quality non-personal datasets. Key elements include establishing an AI computing infrastructure with over 10,000 graphics processing units (GPUs) to support AI startups and offering AI educational courses. The initiative also emphasizes financing deep-tech AI startups and implementing safety measures around AI advancements.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi hailed the approval of the IndiaAI Mission, foreseeing its potential to empower AI startups and expand access to compute infrastructure, thereby propelling India towards global leadership in AI innovation. However, the government also issued a warning to tech companies, mandating prior approval for releasing newly developed AI tools. This directive aims to ensure responsible usage of AI and safeguard against threats to the electoral process, especially with general elections approaching in summer 2024.

India’s commitment to ethical AI usage aligns with Prime Minister Modi’s vision of leveraging AI for social development and inclusive growth. The National Program on Artificial Intelligence and forthcoming AI Mission underline India’s dedication to harnessing AI’s capabilities responsibly. With initiatives like the AIRAWAT national AI portal, India aims to create a conducive environment for AI research, industry collaboration, and startup innovation, further solidifying its position in the global AI landscape.
